We’ve officially reached the midpoint of our project. This is a great moment to look back at what we’ve achieved so far and look ahead to what’s coming next.
Key milestones achieved:
✅ Definition of reduction conditions using carbon-free reducing gas atmospheres, including scenarios with and without NH₃ admixture
✅ Completion of a round robin to mitigate risks of misleading results in the chemical analysis of pellets and fines
✅ Dissemination of results through 1 publication, 2 conference papers, and 2 conference presentations
✅ Organisation of a two-hour stakeholder workshop, featuring valuable insights from project partners and an interactive session to foster knowledge exchange and collaboration
✅ Modification of the test rig to enable systematic testing of H-DRI breakage behaviour
Within the second half of our project, we will focus on:
➡️ Execution of direct reduction (DR) experiments, and subsequent trials with H2-reduced DRI including briquetting of resulting DRI-fines and their reuse-properties in DR
➡️ Systematic assessment of reoxidation behaviour under realistic transport and storage conditions to adapt and optimise a container design for loading, transport, and storage, tailored to the specific properties and requirements of H-DRI
➡️ Quantification of crack formation and fines generation during handling, with the objective of assessing material reuse potential and developing mitigation strategies
➡️ Further and detailed experimental evaluation of passivation approaches to assess risks such as self-heating, ignition, and local explosions during transport and handling
➡️ Identification of critical safety parameters by correlating variations in H-DRI quality (e.g. degree of metallisation, gangue content, particle size distribution) with associated hazards and risk profiles
